Duck Donuts® Partners with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
Duck Donuts Kicks off First Campaign and Introduces “Alex’s Donut”
April 03, 2019 // Franchising.com // MECHANICSBURG, PA - Duck Donuts, known for serving Warm, Delicious and Made-to-Order® donuts, announced today the start of its first in-store campaign to raise funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all children with cancer.
Now through June 30, participating Duck Donuts locations are encouraging guests to purchase “Alex’s Donut,” featuring lemon icing with blueberry drizzle in honor of Alexandra “Alex” Scott who passed away from childhood cancer in 2004. The donut is available to purchase at a special price, with $1 being donated back to support the Foundation’s mission to change the lives of children with cancer through funding impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer.
“Alex’s journey tells the story of a young, brave lemonade stand entrepreneur who was passionate about making a difference in this world in hopes of finding a cure for all childhood cancers,” said Russ DiGilio, CEO and founder of Duck Donuts. “As an entrepreneur, this is an organization we are proud to partner with, and we look forward to establishing a long-standing relationship with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and supporting their mission.”
According to Cancer Facts & Figures 2014, American Cancer Society, one in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old. Despite these facts, childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded. Each dollar raised through the Duck Donuts campaign will fund research that brings better treatments and cures to children with cancer.
“We are excited to welcome Duck Donuts to our team of partners as we work together to fight childhood cancer,” said Liz Scott, ALSF co-executive director and Alex’s mom. “It is supporters like Duck Donuts who help make our mission of raising awareness of and funding impactful research for childhood cancer possible, so that we can continue working toward our ultimate goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer one cup (and one donut) at a time.”
Duck Donuts emphasizes the importance of giving back to the local community through its Quack Gives Back initiatives every month and national corporate partnership with Chemo Duck. The Quack Gives Back program promotes partnering with community groups to raise awareness and funds for their causes and is excited to add Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to its list of national partners.
About Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada having raised more than $150 million so far, funding nearly 1,000 research projects and providing programs to families affected by childhood cancer. About Duck Donuts
Duck Donuts was founded in 2006 by Russ DiGilio in Duck, North Carolina. His intention? To solve a family vacation problem: “Our family wanted a place to buy warm, delicious, made-to-order donuts, and when we couldn’t find one, we decided to start our own.”
By 2011, Duck Donuts had expanded to four Outer Banks locations and the donut business was so successful that DiGilio was continuously approached about franchise opportunities by fans who begged for a Duck Donuts in their community. The first franchise opened in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2013, and there are now 78 open franchise locations in two countries and more than 145 additional contracts in 26 states.
