The Gender Gap - Consider the Staggering Numbers
The gender wage gap ranges from $6,725 to $19,414 throughout the United States, and in 2017, women earned 82% of what men earned according to a Pew Research Center Analysis. In terms of time, this would mean women would need to work an extra 47 days to be on par with men’s earnings, on average. While the gender wage gap has declined since 1980, this is still a long way to closing it.
And it’s not just the income gap that is challenging. Women are underrepresented at every level of the corporate ladder, particularly minority women. For example, just 1 in 5 c-suite leaders is a woman. Women are also less likely to be promoted than men, especially at first, with women 18% less likely than their male counterparts to be promoted from entry level to manager in 2017.
Women Franchise Owners Are Increasing
Equal opportunities in franchising prove that it’s an attractive plan for women, helping to turn the tide on gender inequality. A recent International Franchise Association report analyzed 2012 Census data and found that 30.6% of franchise businesses are women-owned. This is a 50% increase since 2007 when women made up 20.5% of franchise owners. This has likely trended upward since 2012.
Studies continue to show that women make better leaders than men, and natural-born leaders make great franchise owners. Research also shows that female entrepreneurs are more likely to be successful.

The ‘equal pay, equal work’ mantra applies to franchising because both male and female franchise owners get out what they put into it. Beyond income equality, business owners enter franchising for a number of reasons - from the desire to be your own boss to wanting more freedom and flexibility with scheduling to never miss out on an important life event again. Overall satisfaction is high among female franchisees according to a survey by Franchise Business Review, with 90% responding that they enjoy operating the business.
In addition to personal growth opportunities, the franchise sector in general has been growing. So much so that it is expected to outpace the U.S. gross domestic product with an increase of 6.1% ($451 billion) in 2018. If you’re considering franchising, it’s never been a better time!
